Corrigan Makes West to East Atlantic Flight in Fragile Plane

Corrigan, a California aircraft enthusiast, secretly flew from Floyd Bennett Field New York to Baldonnel Ireland in 28 hours 13 minutes in a single motor Curtiss Robin lacking navigation gear radio or parachute. He had no permit landing papers or passport and claimed a misread compass sent him eastward. It was the sixth west to east solo crossing, with Mollison and Beryl Markham having prior successes in the reverse direction.

Wheat allotment set at 55 million acres under AAA act

R Tolley announces national wheat acreage cap of 55 million for fall and spring sowing as part of the 1938 AAA program. The order, signed by M L Wilson acting secretary of agriculture, aims to keep supplies at 30 percent of normal consumption and exports while supporting farm prices and income. Total supply for the year listed at 1.147 billion bushels with a normal supply of 866 million.

Dowager Queen Marie of Romania Dies at Bucharest

Queen Marie, widow of Ferdinand, died at her Bucharest summer residence after a year of illness. King Carol was at her bedside.
