Fanned Again: Local Promoter Profits From Cardboard Fans

In a town within a thousand miles, 27 businessmen paid 27 dollars for 360 cardboard fans bearing their names. The promoter pocketed a small sum, while printing and selling costs consumed the rest. The scheme aimed to exploit local advertising but yielded little value to participants.

Sunday Services and Conference at Methodist Church

The Methodist Church schedules Sunday School at 10 and Morning Worship at 11 with a 7:30 evening service. Last Sunday's morning service by the W.F/MS was fine. Polk farmers buy land with Farm Security loans

Five Polk county farmers purchased 80 acre tracts under the Farm Security administration loan program. Leo Kresha of Osceola bought 80 acres from John Burgess in Silver Creek for 6800 dollars. August Fischer of Silver Creek bought 80 acres from Dr. D. J. Smith in Osceola for 7750 dollars. Harry Bodine of Stromsburg bought 80 acres from Herman Carlson in Osceola for 17500 dollars. Marvin Samuels of Polk bought 80 acres from his father Allan Samuels for 8000 dollars. Charles Massie of Osceola bought 100 acres from Nettie Thelander in Osceola for 8900 dollars. Mr and Mrs Nels Wilson were Thursday evening guests in the Binet Renquist home near Benedict.

Funeral Held for Mrs. P. E. Shostrom at Stromsburg Farm

Funeral services for 73 year old Mrs. P. E. Shostrom were held Sunday at her farm home and Swede Plain Church after a sudden heart attack. She lived in the area most of her life, owned Polk county land, and is survived by two daughters Mable and Mrs. Curtis Flodman, four sons Henry William Dana and Robert, with her husband having died ten weeks earlier.

Arborville notes show Daniel Graves Jr visiting grandmother in York and Lois Cramer vacationing with Wilburta Stenbeck in Stromsburg. Plans Under Way For Big Polk Picnic Day

Polk will host a simple local picnic celebration this year after a commercial club meeting. Plan includes small entertaining events like ball games by local teams, concerts by the high school and city bands, contests and races, and possibly a free evening dance or showing. Officials emphasize affordable, local entertainment and eschew lavish carnivals and gambling wheels.

Obituary: Rasmus G. Nelson Pioneer of York County

Rasmus G. Nelson born in Sweden on May 30 1847 came to the United States in 1866. He settled near York County and later Stromsburg moving to Los Angeles in 1913 where he resided until his death on July 12 1938. He was married to Anna Louise Palmblad in 1876 and had two sons and four daughters with several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in York with interment at Stromsburg Cemetery beside his wife.

Polk county USDA crop insurance supervisor Lynn Brigham warns that August 1 is the deadline for 1939 all risk wheat insurance applications. Shostrom Pioneer Passes After Fifty Years in States

Sophia Hattie Adleson Shostrom died July 20 1938 at age 78 in the Swede Plain Methodist faith. Born in Sweden January 22 1875 she came to the United States in 1873 with her parents Andrew and Johanne Adleson married Peter E. Shostrom December 20 1886 and celebrated a Golden Wedding Anniversary December 20 1936. Survived by six children Dana Henry Willie Robert Mable Amelia seven grandchildren three daughters in law one son in law and siblings John Frank Aleck Adileson sister Mrs Albert Hult Stromsburg and a Sweden half sister. She died after a heart attack following a doctor visit.

Mrs. W. M. Aubry of Council Bluffs Iowa arrived in Polk Monday to visit her twin sister Mrs. John Cohagen. They are known as the twin daughters of David Judd and on Tuesday marked their 66th birthday with friends and relatives at the Cohagen home. Mrs Aubry is mother of Walter Binford of this vicinity.

Mr and Mrs McLain Wilson and Woodrow Wilson left Sunday by auto on a western vacation trip. They plan to visit Col orado and other western points, and expect to be away about 10 days.

Polk County Farmers Union gears up for its annual picnic on August 11 in Polk. events include forenoon softball, noon picnic dinner, Polk School Band concert, a keynote speaker, 3:00 baseball match between two county teams led by Wesley Fredrickson and Norris Johnson, and a Tug o War among four locals. Hof Ostberg trains a heavyweight team for Polk with generous prize offerings in contests.

Fetters attends 75th Gettysburg anniversary shoreside

William H. Fetters aged 93 returned from Gettysburg where he joined 2000 veterans including 500 Confederate soldiers for the 75th anniversary. He travelled with his granddaughter Ruth Larson, noted the friendly reunion, and recalled the solemn dedication of the sternal light memorial by President Roosevelt.
