Worship and sermon at 10:00 Sunday School at 11:00. The Official Board met Monday evening and committees will perform tasks before the Quarterly Conference. Stewards will make rounds and all must strive for 100 percent effort. Most of all, everyone should attend Sunday morning service.
Pastor Carl F. Juergensen leads German services at 9:30 and English services at 10:30 each Sunday. Congregation encouraged to maintain attendance through the summer as visitors are welcome.
The Methodist church lists Sunday School at 10 and Morning Worship at 11 with Evening Services at 7 30 P M The W F M S S will lead the morning service and present songs readings and playlets showing the society s work The annual Thank Offering will be taken All are invited and welcomed and the last Quarterly Conference will be held soon with tasks to complete

State law from 1937 requires owners of threshing machines and combines to clean equipment and wagons after threshing on farms infested with noxious weeds. A printed notice must stay on each machine, with copies available from Frank Eggert, the state inspector, who will inspect operators soon.
University of Nebraska students and faculty conduct six field surveys with federal cooperation. Projects study prehistoric animals, groundwater resources north of Scottsbluff, south Platte valley irrigation, wildlife and grasses in Cherry county, timber survey for future planting, and northeastern archaeological digs. Soil surveys in Lancaster county continue with slope and soil type analysis. Publications and displays follow this summer’s data collection.
Swede Home Luther League will meet this Thursday with Mr and Mrs Oquist and Mr and Mrs Harold Johnson as hosts. Various residents visited relatives over the weekend, including Miss Anna Olson from Omaha and Miss Florence Olson, Mr and Mrs Reuben Johnson of Los Angeles, and families from Stromsburg and York. Junior Choir meets Friday at 4 o clock.
Polk county farmers ship over twenty five carloads of grain as harvest begins. The yield varies from nine to over twenty five bushels per acre, with several fields averaging above twenty five bushels despite a generally lower than expected harvest.
Mrs. Charles Flick and daughters visited the Bedients in York with Miss Lulu Noble. George Coy of Aurora spent a week with the Reckner family. Nettie Hitchcock of Ringworth visited with Gertrude Flick and family. Reckner and Merchant families hosted others in York. Rosemary Morris visited Thais Lackey. R. L. Fisher attended York. Rosemary and Betty Morris joined Betty Smith for Friday afternoon. The Flicks hosted Maurice Flick and Julia Ann at Gertrude Flick’s. Roy Rice of Lapine Oregon and Russell and Ralph Bowers joined Schrader family for Sunday lunch. Warner Bingham of Lake Geneva Wisconsin visiting Otte family. Goldie Fossberg, John Adams, Maxine Fossberg, and Donald Upton visited Doniphan.
Polk County farmers report a booming grasshopper menace despite a cool spring that stunted early hatching. Hoppers have grown in number and size, threatening alfalfa and other tender crops during harvest. Local planters intensify poison bait use as hoppers migrate from nearby counties.
Miss Genevieve Taddiken daughter of Mr and Mrs H F Taddiken Shelby wed Rex Peterson son of Mr and Mrs Terander Peterson Stromsburg at 8 p m in the United Brethren parsonage Rev G T Savery officiated Attendants were Mrs L J Hollingsworth and Gilbert Lavery The couple will farm near Stromsburg Peterson taught in Shelby area and studied at the University of Nebraska A Phi Mu sorority kitchen shower and mock wedding hosted by Mrs Hollingsworth and 27 summer residents provided festivities
Miss Mary Ellen Brown state extension leader of womens project clubs will be in Osceola Saturday July 23 to attend the county Public Speaking contest and speak on her Europe trip. She will use a film strip lecture. The event in district court room at 2 pm also features judges Helen Suchy and two Dodge county leaders. Contestants speaking on Better Schools for Rural America include Mrs Arvid Peterson Osceola Mrs Glenn Hill Polk and Miss Shirley McMeekin Shelby.
Nordberg and Johnson hauled Rev Ramsey's furniture to Wolver ton Minnesota and returned. Walter Conser of Riverside California visited with his mother at the Erickson home and recalled UC Berkeley roommates. Numerous Stromsburg residents and travelers are noted visiting relatives in Lincoln Osceola Valley City St Cloud and Minnesota with plans to tour Yellowstone Lake Louise and Knox ville before returning home.
Miss Pearle Matheson and Lulu Olson returned from Minnesota and Canada. William Olson arrived from South Bend for a week with Charles and family. Jolly Cookers Club gathered at Marybeth Schnasse’s home for a quick bread lesson. Dora Fisher Jean Cook and Berniece McCormick left for a Colorado vacation. Mr and Mrs P B Campbell and Crawford head to the west coast for a month. Mrs F E Merrick suffered bruises in a fall and is cared for at the Merrick home with Dr Alliand. Mrs Viola Cornish moved to Shelby. Albert Ryan buys the M E Bivens building to remodel into a barber shop and residence. Jean Harvey visits then returns to Lincoln. Charles Rogers and family of Council Bluffs to visit E L Rogers this week. Mrs E Rogers travels to Columbus to be with her sister during Mr Jirod’s surgery. Rose Hartman and Harris buy the Marquis property in south Osceola.
County Clerk John I. Anderson certified 203 names for the August 9 primary, minus D T Fenton who withdrew as railway commissioner candidate. Of 202 certified, 26 appear on the non political ballot, the rest split between Republicans and Democrats. Official ballots and samples will be ready ten days before election. Absent voter ballots available by August 1.
Minda Anne Bowlby born February 16 1870 in Indiana died July 11 1938 at age 68 after gallstone complications. She moved to Nebraska in 1872 living near Polk Hoosier Town later near Polk, married Charles H Johnson June 13 1886, had Lenora and Linard. Survived by Lenora Warnick Stromsburg Linard Johnson Clarks, four sisters ten grandchildren. Funeral at Brauer Funeral Home with Rev Pengelly, burial Arborville Cemetery.
The Commercial Club with the Village Council and Polk Local of the Farmers Union invites the Polk County Farmers Union to hold its annual County Picnic in Polk. The invitation is accepted and plans for August 15 are under way. A large countywide crowd is expected and local business support is urged to ensure a successful event.
The High Prairie Mix and Stir Club met July 18 at Dorothy Fredrickson's home. Harvest season kept members away. Josephine Swanson and Terise Nine judged muffins. Genelle Coover with Betty Johnston formed one team. Rosemary Koehler with Terise Nine formed the other. Lunch was served by Vivian and Florenne Larson and Anna Marie Fjell. Next gathering set for July 27 at Rosemary Koehler's home.
Mrs Hennie Seymour entertained ten girls at her home Friday evening for Peggy McGinnis 15th birthday anniversary. Ice cream cake and games followed a gift was given to the honoree. Guests included Ruth Johnson Laura Johnson Vera Stevens Elizabeth Smith Ruth Nelson Elaine Lindburg Irene Whitacre Lois Cramer Welcome Willits Minette Thogsett and Mrs Johnny Preston of Benedict.
Farmers in the area report horses sick with sleeping sickness including Ed Widge Hartwig Feldman and Willard Adelson. Mrs. Paul Strand hosted a birthday tea for daughter Carlyn with out of town guests. A wedding dance for Maxine Kroger and Frank Nelson occurred in Schuyler with Eva Kroger Bailey. Community picnics in Riverside Park and a Commercial Club meeting to plan next month’s celebration are noted. A county farmers union site choice Polk is announced for August lith date tentatively. Rain improves corn, Polk Osceola game results noted. Johnson family moves to Denver. Numerous Sunday visits, drives, and a county road collision near Clarks are listed.
