Out of Old Nebraska Excerpt on Rev Samuel Parker

Reverend Samuel Parker, a Congregational missionary, traveled the Platte Valley in 1835 seeking mission sites among Native Americans en route to Oregon. His efforts followed inspiration from a Christian Advocate report about four “wise men from the west” seeking to bring religion to their people. Parker was initially rejected by the American Board due to age and health concerns.

Parker Chronicle of Early Oregon Mission Journey

Rev Parker and young Dr Marcus Whitman joined a fur company caravan at Bellevue in June 1835 and traveled toward the Oregon country. Parker recorded observations of Platte Valley bluffs Chimney Rock renamed Beacon Hill and the Green River rendezvous. After meeting Flatheads and Nez Perces, Parker continued to Hawaii and New York before publishing Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rocky Mountains.

Summer visitors from Seattle and Lincoln visit relatives

Jorelle Knife of Seattle came Sunday to spend the summer with her grandparents Mr and Mrs H G Brauer and other relatives. Miss Donna Sundberg who is attending summer school at Wesleyan in Lincoln spent the weekend in the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Oscar Sundberg.
