The town clock on Polk’s post office was demolished as part of a modernization. The birdhouse clock once chimed all day, now replaced by the new design. The piece also reflects on life amid air conditioning and changing news delivery, and notes odd local happenings such as a migration of toads and a homemade kite experiment by Don Miller.
The Polk County Fair runs August 17 to 19 with entry day on August 16. Highlights include the Daredevils stunts Thursday at 8:00 p.m., 4-H Beef Sale and Grand Ole Opry Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., a Saturday Horse Show at 1:30 p.m., free barbecue and sky diving at 5:00 p.m., tractor pulling at 8:30 p.m., Teen Hop at the 4-H building, and Satellites music, plus the R and L Amusement carnival on the midway all three days.
The report notes rainfall additions of 1.40 inches since last week with daily amounts on Aug 3 0.35 in Aug 5 0.95 in and Aug 7 0.10 in. The total for 1967 reaches 27.68 inches.

Jay Shaw arrived home from Vietnam on Thursday for a 30 day leave to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Shaw. He is to report back at Ft. Story in Virginia.
The Polk Public Schools begin the 1967-68 term at 8:30 Monday August 28 with a general meeting for grades 7-12 and staff in the high school auditorium. First day shortened to noon, full schedule starts Tuesday August 29, Labor Day no school September 4, with pre-registration August 23-24 and a partial 1967-68 schedule including holidays and key dates through May 17.
Wayne Ramsey finished second in the championship flight at the Riverside sand greens tournament last Sunday. The winner was Morris Johnson of Central City on the 36th hole. John Scott and Burdette Flodman served as Ramsey's caddies.
Patricia Funk was promoted to supervisor in Computer Programming at American Telephone and Telegraph Co. in White Plains New York. The appointment came last week after a week of specialized schooling in Kansas City Missouri. She spent the weekend with sister Karen and brother Steve in Lincoln and visited grandmother Mrs John Myers in Polk Sunday.
Charlotte Louise Larson born August 28 1919 in Fullerton North Dakota was the daughter of Austin and Julia Hoffer. She lived in Grand Island and Polk Nebraska with her husband Morris Larson and three children Julia Larry and Linda. Services were held August 4 at the Evangelical Free Church conducted by Rev Harold Revelling with pallbearers and burial at Hoffer Cemetery near Stromsburg.
The 40th Lind family reunion gathered 76 people at Buckley Park Stromsburg on Sunday August 6 with Marie Clymer Marjorie Lind and Betty Lind leading the committee. A noon meal was followed by a business meeting noting marriages births and a golden wedding anniversary for Rev. and Mrs Clarence Lind.
Local note indicates extensive Summer Recreation Program coverage and final accounting were omitted from this issue and will appear in next week's edition.
Miss Judy Ann O'Shea returned home Thursday after attending summer school at Kearney State.
