Mineral supplements for grazing cattle on pasture
Cattle on pasture from late summer to spring need extra phosphorus as forage lacks it in late season. Commercial supplements or home mixes using steamed bone meal or dicalcium phosphate with salt work well. Salt requirements vary by age and stage, with mature cows consuming about 2 to 3 lb monthly depending on salt form. iodized salt is unnecessary in the area.
Treat Southern Feeders for Grubs Shortly After Arrival at the Feedlot
Southern feeder cattle arriving in Nebraska from Texas and other Southern states should receive systemic grubicide soon after arrival. Grubs may emerge from the back as early as September 1 to 15 depending on origin. Treatment is advised for cattle marketed this fall and winter, with August and September potentially unnecessary for those marketed before December 1. Treatments can be poured on, sprayed, or dipped.
