The Progress recounts John Smith celebrating his 90th birthday with a front page photo and quips. It wades through consumer excess, noting aspirin use, cupcakes, and household wants as signs of affluence, and sketches future town statues honoring repairmen, plus local anecdotes about corn and visitors.
The Polk Public Schools announce the 1971 72 term begins Monday August 30 with orientation for staff August 26 27 and pupil registrations for grades 9 12 at the high school on August 24. New teachers include Dennis Cyborn Cecil Trenkle Carolyn Frey Kinder Dorothy Thengvall Carol Huber and Richard Owens. Football physicals are August 10 and practice starts August 23. Bus routes remain the same as last year.
The National Touring Company presents Jesus Christ Superstar with selections by Bob Welstead at York City Auditorium on July 31 and August 1, 1971 at 8 pm. The concert features twelve performers and five lead vocalists in a rock opera style aimed at all ages, with themes of suffering and discussion among parents and youth.
The summer recreation ball schedules near conclusion with the older boys tourney in the second week of August. 12 to 14 year old girls suffered their first defeat of the season 13-11 to Gresham then beat Benedict 13-3 in three innings. Donations of 15 from Lavern Schulze and 10 from Harold Carlson boosted the Recreation Fund.
Mr Esther Johnson of Merrick Manor entered the Central City hospital Sunday evening. Mrs Johnson is a sister of Mrs Ed Coover. Mr and Mrs Levar Sandell visited Mr and Mrs Ellsworth Browning in Grand Island Sunday night.
Mr and Mrs Frank Harding of Beatrice announce the birth of a son Jacob Franklin born July 19 weighing 7 lbs 8 ozs. Mr and Mrs Dennis Carlson of Shelby welcome daughter Karla Renee born Sunday July 25 at York General Hospital weighing 6 lbs 7 ozs. Mrs Carlson is the former Janelle Smith. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Alvin Smith.
The Pork Woman's Club sponsored Summer Reading program held the last session on July 21. Of 25 participating boys and girls, 21 earned awards for attendance and reading requirements. All attendees at the final session received a treat, with club helpers listed as Ann Moore, Marie Clymer, Karen Merchant, Mary Wischmeier, Janice Widga, Erma Adelson, Ruth Aker, Mary Stauffer, Eleanor Stromberg, and Jo Strand.
