Steam wagon trial opens Nebraska freight route in 1862
In Nebraska Territory the Oregon and California trails dominated overland travel. Gen Joseph R Brown with David Osborn tested a steam wagon in 1862, starting at Nebraska City toward Denver, nearly finishing before engine issues halted the project. The Steam Wagon Road later extended from Otoe County toward Yankee Hill, becoming a major westbound freighting route.
