Legumes Aid Soil Air Water System Through Rotation

Deep rooted legumes such as alfalfa and sweet clover break through compacted plow layers in heavy soils. Their tap roots create channels for water and air, improve soil structure with mineralized organic matter, and support other crops. Phosphate and potash help alfalfa and sweet clover perform these gains.

Ayrshire Sales Set Records in Ohio Auction

Smash sale results show Ayrshire cattle breaking records in the United States. An average of 2267.39 dollars was paid for 23 Scottish bred Ayr shires imported and sold by Frank V. Lile of Bellefontaine Ohio, totaling 52150 dollars. A new Ayrshire bull calf price record reached 4600 dollars with the eight month Killoch Gay Spark purchased by Howard Baum and Sons of Paint Valley Farm Bainbridge Ohio.

Increased Yields Seen With Fertilizer Use

Dr. D. R. Dodd of the Ohio experiment station reports that fertilizer can raise yields in wheat by 7 to 14 bushels per acre and boost hay and pasture crops seeded in small grains. Tests on plots show the land already well managed with prior gains producing 23 bushels of wheat, 8 percent bushels of corn, and 3 tons of hay per acre, with higher fertilizer rates applied to wheat in increasing amounts.

Minnesota Launches Two Million Tree Planting Drive

Minnesota begins a wide tree planting program authorized last year. The state plans about two million trees this year, with one million deciduous and conifer trees sold at cost for private lands and another million trees provided free for public lands planting.
