Rye for Livestock Provides Feed Option for Cass County
W. W. Derrick of the Nebraska College of Agriculture suggests rye as livestock feed for Cass county farmers until corn is ready. Ground rye fattens calves well and may match shelled corn gains economically, but is less effective for hogs in dry lots. Mixing rye with corn improves hog gains. rye suits hogs on pasture better than in dry lots. For lambs, whole rye performs comparably to wheat or barley, with alfalfa hay, and grinding is unnecessary for sheep.
