Fifty years ago J Frank Duryea and his brother Charles formed the Duryea Motor Wagon Corp They built and sold 16 cars in 1896 and established the United States earliest automobile manufacturing as the 1895 model featured four wheels pneumatic tires ball bearings and a gear cone lever system. The Duryea firm faded in the 1900s despite early prestige after winning the American automobile race at Chicago on Thanksgiving Day 1895.
