Osceola and Polk County celebrate local servicemen with enlistments, transfers, discharges, and promotions. Pvt Gene Cole completed training and serves at McCook Nebr. base after Chanute Field and Fairmont. Sgt Alvin Anderson discharged at Lowry Field. Other notes cover furloughs, deployments, and re enlistments in camps and ships abroad.

Mrs. John Young returns to Fullerton after caring for daughter Mrs. C. L. Dake who is slowly improving. Large crowd attends Blackwood Brothers concert at Fairview Hall. Cliff Johnston injured in corn picker incident. George Buchta family to visit Denver daughter Carol. Lillie Carlson of Omaha visits C. O. Carlson. Clair McCormick and Lanny Stromsburg guests at Wm. Duke home. C. R. Carlson hosts dinner in honor of Olive Carlson from California. Carlson and Wieseman return from Montana hunting trip.
John Alt entered St Marys hospital in Columbus for medical treatment Tuesday. Howard Gebhardt of the Navy visited at the Matt Glatter home Wednesday evening. John Gabriel of the valley visited Leonard Hiemer Monday evening. Evelyn Vrbka returned to Omaha Sunday after a four week stay with the Vrbka family. Leonard and Mrs Hiemer and sons were Sunday dinner guests at the Gabriel home on the valley. Herman Roehner and family John Reisdorf and Father Kean were dinner guests at the Reisdorf home.
An advertising notice promotes a special November offer from the Omaha World-Herald, listing a 25 week subscription for 4.00 and instructions to mail or leave orders at the newspaper office.
Richard York of Lincoln, an employee in Polk, recalls Ted Ekdahl, a Polk native and B-17 tail gunner, killed when their bomber was hit over Germany on July 19, 1944. York says Ekdahl shot down three enemy fighters before the plane went down in flames. three chutes opened, the rest perished with the ship. Ekdahl was later listed as dead after being missing in action.
Mrs Maurice VanHouten and Mrs Carl Allinder hosted a miscellaneous shower at the VanHouten home for Miss Elsie Gissler bride to be. A second group gathered at the Berck home hosted by Mrs W W Berck and Mrs Carl Cederberg. Gissler will marry Dale Clark of Stromsburg next month.

Donald L. Aden age 15 son of Huert and Mrs Aden formerly of Osceola and Shelby, now Rawlins Wyoming, drowned at Camp Lejeune North Carolina last Thursday. He had joined the Marine Corps last July 4 and was training there. Remains brought to Shelby where funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday at the Methodist Church with Rev Randolph and the American Legion. Burial was in Shelby cemetery.
Polk County reports about 65 percent of its Victory War Bond quota raised to date led by Elmer Nordlund as chair of the War Finance Committee. Totals show Shelby 13700 Osceola 41081.25 Stromsburg 103377.50 Polk 12806.25 for a county total of 170965.00 against a 282060 quota. Local line calls urged rural Polk residents to buy bonds with city chairs Howard Herbes Polk Phil Campbell Osceola Elmer Richter Stromsburg Alfred Gabel Shelby. Lincoln Telephone provided free lines. The Osceola Bulldogs close their 1945 season by defeating Burg 18 to 6. Burg scored early, with a six minute drive ending in a rushing touchdown, but Osceola replied with a 70 yard march and a touchdown by Anderson. Cole added a second half TD on a reverse. Luft scored late in the game andBoily Anderson returned to form after illness. Gerald Johnson stood out on the line.

George Anderson and family visited Axtell New. Floriene and Lorraine Larson from Omaha visited parents. Clarence Carlson Rolland Ekstrom and Karlene dined with Art Ekstrom. Harlan Johnson and son visited St Edwards Neb. Infant baptized at Swede Home Church. Marvin Fredrickson and Oscar Fredrickson dined with Ansel Fredrickson. Mrs Chindgren and Lillie joined a birthday party for Mrs Albert Johnson.
There will be services at Valley Church next Sunday evening November 25 at 8 00 pm. Local congregation invites all parishioners to attend.
Funeral services were held November 15 at Swede Home Lutheran Church for William Arthur Van Doren of Seattle. He died of a heart attack November 9 while returning home from work. Born September 18 1902 in Staunton Virginia he was 43. Survived by wife Signe Sandin and daughter Diana 13 and brother Albert of California. Burial at Swede Home Cemetery.
Oscendia couple visit Nelsons on Sunday. Cpl Wilmer Carter recently discharged from Japan visits sister. Her family and friends travel in from Lincoln for a conference. Daes and Dawes visit, with Ag and Home Demonstration Agents meeting in Lincoln. En route, Navy writes of Marines, typhoons and mines. Mrs Campbell improving at home after illness.
Mrs. C F Moore and Mrs. J T Stanton visited Lincoln for Betty Stanton’s birthday. Jack Christensen arrived from Fort Knox to spend three days with his father H Christensen. Several families hosted dinners including Mrs W D Rystrom and relatives. San Diego guests at E H Moberg home. S Sgt David Speirs, discharged after 26 months in Europe, returned from Amarillo. Obituary-related travel notes as O M Nelson’s death drew kin to Los Angeles. Willara Anderson attended an REA meeting in Denver.

S. P. Johnson of Osceola married Mrs. Hanna C. Krumbach of McPherson Kansas at the home of Rev. C. H. Campbell in Concordia at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday November 17 1945. Mrs. Johnson served with Topeka Public Health. They will reside at Gospel Ridge in Johnsons home.
Don Anderson a high school senior was chosen by teammates as captain for the 1945 football season. He plays halfback and has been on the team throughout high school. Armistice Day game against Stromsburg marked the last for several seniors including Bernard and Bruce Berek Lea Johnson Delmar Stuft Kenneth Schutt and Harold Grossnicklaus alongside Captain Anderson. Players earning football letters this year include Byers Cole Mills Norton Wieseman Kuhnel R. Johnson Girardin G. Johnson and Deeds.
St Francis Hospital lists patients treated last week with details of surgeries. William H Norton had an appendectomy. Ralph Watts suffered a mangled hand from a corn picker. Dorothy Fintel recovering from ruptured appendix. Tom Brigham from Shelby also a surgical patient. Greens Chapel reports the WSCS will meet Friday with Mrs. C. W. Hennings and Mrs. T. E. Nelson hosting. A Bazaar is planned for December 6. Jolly Workers Club meets Tuesday November 27 for Christmas lessons at Mrs. George Steever’s home with Mrs. Rhoda Warner hosting and Eva Bute and Margaret Anderson attending. Various local visits and moves are noted, including openings at Osceola and Arcadia, with multiple families hosting guests and birthday events continuing through the week.
