Sheriff Carl North and Deputy Lloyd Pontine solved a case from February 8 after a car crashed into the Glenvil cemetery fence and parts were found. Hood ornaments and other fragments helped identify the vehicle in a mystery that lingered until the driver was located.
Ray H. Neisewander of Capitol Wood Works in Springfield promised a return visit to Schuyler this week to discuss a site for his plant in Nebraska. The firm makes overhead garage doors and other wood products for Colfax County.
Mrs W E McIntyre leaves Grand Island for Denver to board a Berry Tour Pullman car and travel ten days with friends to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast for Mardi Gras. A St Paul Phonograph note accompanies the item. In Silver Creek Jason W House retires from business selling his Service Filling Station to Leonard and Hilbert Robak ending a long oil trading career.
The Central City Farmers Union state exchange store will be discontinued in a few weeks as the building has been leased to another concern. Williams said no other suitable building could be found in the area.
Raymond Jensen suffered painful burns to both hands, his face, and forehead on Friday afternoon while cleaning windows at Woody's station. He mixed gasoline with hot water, the gasoline exploded near an open valve, causing a fire.
Joe Schmitz of Madison, son of Mr and Mrs August Schmitz, was accidentally killed at Moffett Field California Tuesday when a bolt from a plane wheel assembly broke and a dropping gear struck him.
Dr. Frank H. Sisler has opened offices in Sumner to practice medicine and plans to erect his own offices this summer. The Dawson County Herald reports no room for another plate at the Dawson County Feeders banquet in Lexington after a tour of local feedlots.
Dr C A Erickson of York has been re elected president of the Nebraska Optometry Board which holds twice yearly meetings to review license applications to practice optometry in the state.
The February Luther League Vesper featured the theme For the Glory of Christ with scripture readings and prayers by Robert Walgreen Gregg Ek lund Herman Anderson and Robert Johnson A skit Into The Word was presented by Alice Lorraine Johnson Dwight Swanson Marian Boden and Max Anderson The welcome came from Vernon Boden candlelighting by Rosemary Walgreen and Yvonne Anderson Anita Branting Ruth Eklund and Lois Klingman The service included Saviour Thy Dying Love sung by Bette Thelander and others with JoAnne Carlson at the piano and ushers Martin Nelson and LeMoyne Monson Rev Homer P Bollinger spoke Thursday and Oral Fisher sang. Vernon Boden and Yvonne Anderson were elected delegates to the Spring Bible Conference at Luther College.
At St Francis Hospital the birth of a baby girl for Mrs. Virginia McVeigh is noted. Surgical and medical items include Mrs. Bertha Hoffman and Mrs. Thelma Peterson. Also mentioned is Edmund Mustard and Mrs. Ben Schmoker.
Sunday visitors included Mr. and Mrs. John Aden and son Fred of Rising City, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Aden of Milford, Mr. and Mrs. Will Herrmann, and Mrs. P. C. Wieseman.
Polk County farmers will reduce corn plantings by 20 percent as PMA allotments are processed. Notices should reach most by March 6 with some possible delays. The cut reflects government storage of large 1947 48 49 crops, leaving about 89 000 acres for 1950. Legumes and grasses are suggested as the alternate crops.
Funeral services for Raymond Ostrander three-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Ostrander were held Monday at Brauer Funeral Home. Rev Paul Walker officiated with burial in Bellwood cemetery. Raymond died Friday after a fall Thursday night at home led to injuries. Survivors include siblings Harold Elsie Frankie James Nadine Robert Elaine and Lois.
Mrs. Eva Whaley aged 92 was buried at Osceola cemetery on Monday. She lived in Lincoln for years after moving from Osceola. Her husband predeceased her. She is survived by a son in Central City and a daughter in Lincoln.
About 40 guests gathered at the legion rooms Saturday afternoon at 3 for a miscellaneous shower honoring Mrs Bud Hoffman of Omaha. Hostesses were Mrs W R Kepner and daughter Janet and Mrs Herman Anderson and daughter Mary. Games were played before gifts were opened and lunch was served with jonquil centerpiece and yellow tapers. Mrs H W Pratt of Lincoln poured. Out of town guests included Mrs George Bond of Gresham Mrs Esther Pratt of Lincoln Mrs Lloyd O Hoffman Sr and Miss Helen Wieseman of Omaha Miss Doris Wieseman of Lincoln Mrs Arthur Morrill and Mrs A V Kjellson of Stromsburg.
Mr and Mrs Frank Craven of Exeter spent Sunday visiting at the Geo Craven residence.
Four Republican state leaders met with local Republicans at the Polk County courthouse in a Monday session led by Roy L. Eric son of Stromsburg. David Martin of Kearney, Nebraska's new state chairman, outlined goals while Mrs. Eve Bowring, Edna Donald, and John Binning spoke on women’s outreach, party policy, and winning young voters. Martin stressed business factors. Binning warned about Democratic gains from government benefits. attendees discussed strategies for 1950 and 1952 campaigns.
The Goldenrod Conference named its first and second all star teams last week. First team forwards were Wills of Shelby and Kiser of Genoa, center Flodman of Polk, and Erickson of Stromsburg with Reitz of Genoa at guard. Second team forwards Johnston of Osceola, Long of Polk and Snyder of Genoa, centers Nordberg of Stromsburg and Sokel of Silver Creek, guards Holmes of Polk, Walden of Shelby and Hayes of Clarks. The conference grade tournament will be in Osceola March 13 14 and 15, with St Paul as a new member making its tournament debut.
C F Moore a former district resident and longtime manager at the Kent and Burke ranch died in Genoa last Tuesday. Services were held there with burial at Silver Creek Thursday afternoon. His wife a son and a daughter survive him. The column notes social visits and upcoming moves of neighbors and friends across the area including Osceola Central City Krakow and Silver Creek.
The District Class C tournament started in Osceola with three games last night as Genoa versus Stromsburg, Shelby versus Polk, and Osceola versus Dwight Assumption. Seeds include Genoa and Dwight Assumption. finals Friday night at 9 00 with two Thursday games and a Friday consolation. Officials Schnabel Lenihan. manager L E Hanson. admission 70 cents.
Nelle J Wisely born November 3 1874 in Spencer County Indiana died February 20 1950 at her Osceola home. Daughter of Samuel H and Emma Taylor Wisely one of twelve. Survivors include sisters Mae Hastings Osceola Nebraska Laura Wilcox Olympia Washington Blanch Peterson Long Beach California brother Paul Wisely Central City Nebraska many nieces nephews and friends. Funeral February 23 1950 at Fairview Methodist Church at 2 00 pm with nephews Raymond Hastings Ronald Peterson William Wilcox Dee Hastings Melvin Wilcox Harold Headlee as pallbearers. Interment Beulah cemetery.
Dr Kelley announces moving into his newly remodeled Midland building on March 15. The facility includes examination, consultation, X ray, laboratory and reception areas with a modern interior. No appointments will be available March 13 and 14 due to the move.

Polk County invited to host the Sixth District Black and White dairy show at the Fairgrounds in May. Paul Swanson of the Holstein Association received the invitation on Monday from multiple organizations. The 12-county district, serving central Nebraska, aims to showcase and judge entries. The show partners with the local extension service and college extension department, with 4-H and FFA dairy projects incorporated. The state show will be in Columbus the next day, offering easier transportation for southern district exhibitors.

St. Edward beat Osceola 40 to 32 on February 24 at the St. Edward court. Osceola led late in the game before a rally by St. Eds, Walgreen scoring 18 for the Bulldogs. Johnston and Watts were limited by illness and injury.
A shower at the Oscar Anderson home Friday evening honored Miss Phyllis Anderson bride-to-be. Pink and white decor used a pink heart motif with Heart Bingo and a pink umbrella. Katherine and Mary Anderson carried a pink heart basket of gifts. lunch followed with sweet pea favors. Hostesses were Mesdames Otto Olson Mauritz Swanson Rudolph Sandin and Oscar Anderson.
Mr and Mrs Jack Malek celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday February 26. The event at their home ran from two to five oclock with relatives and gifts and a decorated serving table featuring a miniature bride and groom and 25 candles. Also honored were Mr and Mrs Mervin Heimer celebrating their first anniversary and Mr and Mrs Rolland Sarow celebrating their 12th anniversary.
The public sale of the Gilbert Benson Estate will be held at the farm four and a half miles southwest of Polk on March 7. The sale will feature a complete line of farming machinery including nearly new heavy equipment and many lightly used or unused smaller items. Tractors cultivators plows and combines and other items needed on local farms will be offered.
