Mr and Mrs William E Ferris celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary February 11 with a pleasant surprise on Sunday afternoon as relatives gathered at their home to help celebrate. Silver Creek and nearby areas were mentioned in the event description.
Irvin R. Huebner, a St. Paul commercial artist, paints designs on rayon or silk cravats after sketching. His neckwear art has impressed wearers who display ties instead of coats, and local stores have bought out the stock while he awaits more paints to finish his back orders.
Members of Kronborg Lutheran church and their minister will establish a home for a family of eight displaced Romanians arriving this Sunday. A church committee is preparing a farm with furniture kitchen utensils and curtains for their arrival in the local community.
Joe Warner a prominent farmer living east of Greeley suffered the loss of his right hand late Monday while using a small rotary snow plow behind the Warner locker plant in Greeley. The machine clogged and his hand was caught in the blades severing it. Scotia Regis ter.
Lawrence Robins of David City owns 500 to 600 bee hives in Butler county and nearby areas. He sold a truckload of 10 000 pounds of honey to a Kansas City company last week. A second load is planned in about three weeks.
Bert C. Rogers a 62 year old animal trainer for a circus died Friday in David City hospital after a stay in Surprise. A daughter from Perles Texas arranged to have the body shipped to Perles. Rogers animals kept in a Surprise garage were sold soon after.
Holstein breeders from 13 counties of district six of the Nebraska Holstein Breeders Association will gather tomorrow at the Henry Stubbe farm for their annual district meeting in Central City.
George C. Novotny of Colfax County was chosen president of the County Assessors Association of Nebraska during the state convention in Omaha. The vote highlighted Colfax County Call coverage of the event.
Mr and Mrs Dale B Sayre of Longmeadow Massachusetts announce the engagement of their daughter Nancy to William H Norton son of Mr and Mrs W W Norton of this city The couple attend the University of Nebraska and have set April 6 for their wedding date.
The Volunteer Fire Department of Osceola will meet Thursday night February 23 at 8 o'clock. All members are urged to be on hand for the meeting.
A Smorgasbord prepared by St. Paul Lutheran Church members attracted one of the town’s largest meals events. About 75 items were offered with hot dishes continuously replenished, and Mrs Mart Anderson led the organizing team with servers in Swedish costumes.
The District Class C basketball tournament begins March 1 in Osceola and runs through March 3 with seven teams: Genoa Stromsburg Shelby Clarks Polk Dwight Assumption and Osceola. Evening games only with one bye in the first round. Dwight Assumption and Genoa seeded. Officials Schnabel Lenihan Fre ment and Leonard Hanson manage the event with 70c and 35c admission.
Notice to veterans invites enrollment in On the Farm Training at Osceola High School starting March 1 1950. Contact M A Mills Jr Osceola County Service Officer. Training carries subsistence allowance about 97 50 monthly if enrolled before July 25 1951. Re adjustment Allowance of 100 monthly does not affect eligibility.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly meeting next Monday night February 27 at the legion rooms. Walter Raecke prominent Central City lawyer and former state senator will address the gathering along with routine business items.
Joe Karges was dismissed from St. Francis Hospital Osceola after treatment and observation. Columbus visitors Mr. and Mrs. Orville Lamb spent Saturday and Sunday with Eva Roth in Silver Creek. Henry Galus joined Joe Karges for a Saturday visit. John Voichoske family and Mrs Zelazny hosted Sunday dinner in Clark. Ronald Carlson visited York. Additional calls and dinners noted among neighbors including Fritz Dittmer home.
Miss Nelle Wisely, about 75, died suddenly Monday morning at her apartment in the Ben McCormick home after shoveling snow. Funeral services were held Thursday at two o'clock p m at Fairview Church with burial in Beulah cemetery.
Osceola hosted St Bonaventure on February 15 and beat Columbus 36 to 28 after leading 11-5 and 17-17 at halftime. Dick Sterup led Osceola with nine points and the team rallied in the fourth. The reserves beat St Bonaventure 38-27. Osceola then lost at Polk 50-37, with Monson and Nelson each scoring eight for Osceola. The reserves won 41-30 behind Johnson with ten points.
The public sale of the Gilbert Benson Estate will be held at the farm four and a half miles southwest of Polk on March 7. The sale includes a complete line of farming machinery, with heavier equipment in nearly new condition and some items unused. Tractors cultivators plows and combines will be offered, with a complete list to follow in next week’s paper.

A 1873 Osceola issue fragment was discovered east of the square by Duane Gabel during demolition. The torn headline shows Osceol with unclear title, includes an Odd Bit joke and quirky ad prices from S. N. Drew and Company at the southeast square corner.
Six purebred Duroc gilts purchased through the Polk County Agriculture III class and FFA at the George Carlson sale in Sutton on February 15. Students Gerald Bryan Dick Watts Walden Johnson Vernon Boden and Kenneth Beebe bought gilts with funds from a school corn project that raised over 200. The gilt will be cared for by Bob Husak and returned to the program next year for others.
Cub Pack No. 162 marked the 40th anniversary of Scouting with a Blue and Gold Dinner at the Methodist Church on Wednesday evening February 15. Knights of the Scout Crusade themed program awarded badges and honors to Den No.1 and Den No.2 participants while welcoming Scoutmaster Mills and Rev. Bollinger as special guests.
PEO to meet Katherine Norton on March 2 for an evening covered dish supper. Rebekah Lodge invites members to Friday evening meetings at the lodge rooms.

Walter Watts will hold a sale Friday March 3 a mile west of Osceola featuring 166 head of hogs many fall pigs 17 head of Wisconsin heifers and a large selection of farm machinery including six tractors elevators and combines Merrick Ingalls and Augustin will cry the sale with the First National Bank of Osceola serving as clerk.
The Polk County Farm Loan groups postpone the gym meeting due to the storm. Alvin Grubaugh, secretary, says the event moves to next Monday February 27 at the same school gym and time with the same program and invitees.
The Topnotchers 4-H Club met at leader Paul Monson's home on Monday evening February 6 with 12 members and six adults present. After the business meeting members discussed projects and a recreation period followed. Mrs. Paul Monson provided a lunch. Roger Johnson Reporter

The Merry Mixers convened on February 11 at Davida Sundberg’s home and later visited the LaVelle Lamoree dairy barn and milk house to review Grade A milk requirements. Davida Sundberg demonstrated table setting and Patty Peterson demonstrated freezing peas. A Valentine party followed with games, gift opening, and lunch provided by Mrs. Howard Sundberg.
Lawrence Swanson led a ten day Gulf of Mexico trip with 200 Carlson Hybrid Corn Company dealers from Iowa Nebraska Minnesota South Dakota and Kansas. The tour includes Ozark country Missouri Mardi Gras in New Orleans and fishing from Gulf steamers.
Phyllis Ann From, daughter of Mrs. Ben Schmoker, wed Sgt. Ivan R. Her at her parents home on February 19. Rev. G A Randall officiated before potted plants. They will reside in Omaha where he is stationed.
About 200 county presidents and leaders from 22 Nebraska counties attended a Southeast District meeting in Lincoln described as crucial to the Farm Bureau. Charles Marshall and Robert Thompson stressed local member input, policy formulation through resolutions, and pursuing legislation.
The estate of the late John Grossnicklaus will be sold at public auction at the Osceola area farm two miles east four miles north and one half mile west on Monday February 27. A good line of farm machinery household goods and miscellaneous articles will be offered. The auction starts at 1 30 p m.
The World Day of Prayer will be observed at the Methodist Church on Friday February 24. A 1 15 p m pot luck luncheon will be served in the basement followed by special music and a program. Everyone is welcome and should bring their own table service and a covered dish.
Polk County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports weak statewide totals but notes Stromsburg and Shelby drives show promise. Treasurer Carleton E. Anderson cites $2615.16 deposited to date and Polk estimates above $350. Shelby fundraiser nets $132.53. American Legion in Shelby seeks extended drive Sunday February 26 to aid funds.
Tuesday Feb 21 marked the 55th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs John G Carlson of Osceola. The well known couple farmed south of Osceola for years before moving into town to retire. Both are in good health.
Rita Kresha a high school junior won first place in the National Oratorical Contest district level for six counties. Her oration titled Our Constitution Ordained by Free Men Sustained By Free Men earned her a medal and entry to the state contest in Fremont on February 23 with coach Lillian McDonald and transport by E C Schott.
Red Cross in Osceola reports 43 more pints of blood distributed from the St Francis hospital bank during the unit’s stay here. A donor day is planned at the Osceola courthouse on March 8 with announcements next week and a reminder to plan to give on March 32. Weather has eased snow, with thaw/freeze cycles, while no late flooding is noted. City sprayed for bugs and mosquitoes next summer to improve conditions. Osceola’s school band earned compliments at Farmers Day for musical progress under John Adams. The Osceola Chamber Activities Committee hosted a noon lunch for over 400 attendees. Osceola has withdrawn from the Cornhusker League baseball season due to lack of interest and backing.
