Desegregation challenge in Leake County schools
NAACP asks federal court for protection for Negro children authorized to attend Carthage Elementary amid alleged white intimidation. Leake County's deseg order drew mixed views as only one Negro pupil, Debra Lewis, enrolled. Judge Mize promised an early ruling. Also in Jackson, three Negro congressional candidates were ruled ineligible for the general election ballot, leaving most of Mississippi's delegation unopposed except Rep. Arthur Winstead who faces Prentiss Walker.
