Norwalk Water Works Roots and Early City Fire Facts
Norwalk began its first water works in 1870 on the Huron River with a pumping station and settling basin. The village built dams and two engineer houses in 1874 costing 2600 dollars. A 1874 fire alarm telegraph system aided firefighting, and a 1894 fire near the Graham home was contained using local rain-water tanks. Shaker connections in Huron County trace to Charles Sweet, who joined North Union Shakers in 1854 and died in 1874. On Dec 18 1874, 234 hitching teams crowded Main Street.
