Free Legal Service ABLE Divides Huron County Attorneys

Under the U S Legal Services Corp Act ABLE is tightly regulated and can take no fee generating cases. Eligibility caps limit earnings to 310 a month for individuals and 610 for a four person family. Local lawyers react with indifference opposition or support. Some fear screening gaps and business loss while others welcome relief from unprofitable lawsuits. Public defender Russell Leffler and private attorney Jack Fynes praise the idea noting the need for affordable legal help. Judge Walter Butz says the bar will cooperate and a referral list may aid clients. Some Norwalk lawyers see ABLE as unnecessary while others anticipate benefits and costs. ABLE operates with four offices and a 700 000 budget and is likely here to stay.
