The program, federally funded and based in Toledo, serves 14 counties and opened a Fremont office. Huron County bars are receptive but not committed. Leffler Gets Pay Raise In Huron County Public Defender panel
The Huron County Public Defender commission approved a $500 raise for Assistant Public Defender Russell V. Leffler at its Wednesday night meeting raising his pay from $14,000 to $14,500. Public Defender John Alston said funds exist to cover the raise without extra county money. The panel also considered why Alston lacks the same fringe benefits as other county employers.

No-Nos Report Links Smoking To Cancer And Heart Disease
The surgeon general released a 1200 page report linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer and heart disease, with birth defects and ulcers also noted. It reports three in ten adults smoke, with rising female smoking and increased lung cancer in women and pregnant women linked to birth defects. The tobacco industry dismissed the findings as a media event.

German Study Links Beer to Cancer Risk Across Europe
A two year study by the German Cancer Research Center tested 158 beers and found nitrosamine traces in 70 percent. The center says nitrosamine forms when malt is dried and that new tech may prevent it. US brewers say American beer may also harbor trace levels. industry groups are testing domestically.
