Norwalk Schools Keep Open as 30 Teachers Slashed

Norwalk public schools will trim 30 teaching positions next fall to save about 173000 this year, while Bronson and Benedict Elementary Schools stay open. The board rejected closing schools, considering attrition and contract non renewals, amid income declines and a tight budget plan that may shift programs and staffing across K–12. Local superintendent James Rubright noted possible gains if state funds increase and outlined specific program eliminations including art music physical education and language offerings.

School Board Approves Millage Rates and 200000 Bond Borrowing

The board voted to set operations at about 31.6 mills with a 22.7 mill expected after rollback and state adjustments. They approved borrowing 200000 from the bond retirement fund to cover bills until tax settlement, set six percent interest, and adopted a 988000 temporary appropriation for early 1979 expenses including salaries, supplies, maintenance, contracts, fixed charges, and lunch room funding.

Anonymous donor gives 35000 for Norwalk High seats

An unnamed benefactor donated 35000 to the Norwalk Board of Education to repair or replace seats in the Norwalk High School Auditorium. The board accepted the gift under the condition that the donor’s identity remain confidential.

Ardeth Chupp Named New Treasurer for Huron County
