German Export Items Include Car Promised To People By Hitler
Hitler promised a cheap people’s car for Germany’s motor highway program but most buyers did not receive cars. The Volkswagen, produced prewar and now mainly for export, sells at 800 dollars a unit bulk, rising to 1500 dollars for individuals, with sales to Sweden, Belgium, and others. Production targets and postwar currency reforms shaped exports. The car weighs 1600 pounds, has an 11 horsepower engine, and uses little fuel, with imports limited to rubber and paint materials from the United States and Britain.
