Grave of Masaryk Shunned by Czechoslovakia under Communists
The hillside grave of Tomas Masaryk, founder of democratic Czechoslovakia, remains unmarked and largely forgotten under the Communist regime. No signs point to the site, though visitors leave flowers and recall his anti-Communist leadership and early democracy work. His burial site was chosen by Masaryk, and his wife Charlotte Garrigue and son Jan lie nearby. The regime has erased many monuments, but a lone plaque in the U.S. Embassy corridor preserves his name.
