House votes to strip states of power on union shop bans

The House passed 221 to 203 a bill to repeal Taft-Hartley 14B banning state limits on union shop contracts. Support from 200 Democrats and 21 Republicans contrasted with 8 Democrats and 117 Republicans opposing. Critics warn the Senate will block the move, calling it rushed under gag rule. Meany hailed the vote as a step toward justice for workers.

Twisters Bring Heavy Rains Across South Plains

Thunder showers drenched the South Plains with up to two inches of moisture while temperatures cooled. Twin funnel clouds were sighted near Sudan but caused no damage. Lubbock reported .76 inch rain and a high of 86, with light showers expected today.

Johnson orders 50 000 more troops to Viet Nam and Mideast moves

President Johnson announced a large troop buildup to Viet Nam raising U S forces from 75 000 to 125 000 and increasing draft calls from 17 000 to 35 000 monthly. He said a new Air Mobile Division of nearly 16 000 would be sent and urged UN help to halt aggression. Abe Fortas was named to the Supreme Court in place of Goldberg.

Johnson outlines Viet Nam era draft and VOA direction

President Johnson announced a stepped up draft calling 35 000 monthly with Navy induction for October and a November peak, while deferment rules remain unchanged though local boards may tighten. Selective Service chief Hershey said he can meet the 35 000 target if pre induction exams proceed and noted the manpower pool stands at about 80 000 youths examined and accepted.

Miss Texas Pageant Opens With Prelim Talent and Swim Suit Wins

Miss San Antonio Wanda Dolores Smith aged 19 won the talent contest while Miss Houston Julia Jean Keith aged 18 took the swimsuit title during preliminary events at Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium. Sixty six contestants are entered as the four day pageant begins with preliminaries and scheduled rounds tomorrow.

Infant dies after car hits utility pole in Lubbock

Cynthia Sue Beevers 14 months old died after the car her mother Ronnie Beevers was driving struck a curb and a utility pole on Quirt Avenue. Carolyn Lynn and Paula Beevers were injured. mother and another child treated and released. The accident occurred at 10 30 a m Wednesday and marked the tenth traffic fatality in Lubbock this year.

Health care plan passes Senate to aid 19 million seniors

The Senate approved a $6.5 billion expansion of Social Security to provide up to 190 days of hospitalization and nursing home care for Americans 65 and older. The bill heads to President Johnson who is expected to sign, with benefits rising and payroll taxes increasing next year.
