New APHS Agency Created Within Agriculture Dept

Washington reports a new Animal and Plant Health Service will be formed inside the Agriculture Department. No new salaries or staff. APHS will absorb ARS regulatory duties including Animal Health Veterinary Biologics Plant Protection and Quarantine Inspections. Acting Administrator will be Dr Francis J Mulhern with Talcott W Edminster remaining ARS head. The move aims to boost efficiency and free ARS for research while transferring about 5000 ARS employees to APHS. APHS will oversee a national program to prevent worthless or harmful animal products and collaborate with states to curb diseases and pests.

Pregnancy After Kidney Transplant Raises Chromosome Concerns

New York UPI reports a ten month post transplant pregnancy where a newborn showed broken chromosomes in blood, suggesting azathioprine crossing the placental barrier. Doctors note chromosome abnormalities disappeared later, leaving questions about reproductive risks and fetal impact of immunosuppressants.
