County approves two year sheriff’s dept study plan

Sheriff John Carpenter leads a two year organizational study of the sheriff’s department funded by a state commission grant. Dr. Paul M. Whisenand will help head the training program, stressing no drastic reorganization but improved efficiency and foresight for 1975 and 1980.

Man wins appeal for mobile home driveway in Goleta Valley

Arthur H. Hardy Jr. won his appeal before the Board of Supervisors to add a separate driveway and parking area at 415 Pacific Oaks Rd Goleta Valley. Road officials voiced concern about setting a precedent as neighbors supported the plan citing safety and off street parking after an incident involving a thrown avocado.

Youth loses dream after nap during Klemperer concert

Hiroyuki Ohno, a 16 year old Tokyo cello student, spent 1358 on a round trip to London to hear Otto Klemperer conduct Brahms Third Symphony at the Royal Festival Hall. He slept through the performance, woke to an empty front row, then spoke with the conductor in his hotel study before flying home with a promise to return.

White Cane Days Weekend Proclaimed by Lompoc Mayor

Art Scott the mayor has proclaimed Friday and Saturday as White Cane Days. The Lompoc Lions Club and other Lions Clubs in California-Nevada aim to raise funds to prevent blindness assist those who are blind and fund medical exams and corrective aids. The club reports 148 glasses and one glass eye donated in five years and notes purchases of an electronic light view machine and a guide dog donation. This year the club joined the Southern California Eye Institute to expand services for the needy.

All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial in Santa Maria

The Santa Maria Kennel Club hosts its 15th annual All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial at the Santa Maria Fairgrounds on Sunday. Junior Handling is offered for ages 8–12 and 13–16 with dogs entered in breed or obedience classes. Judges come from multiple states and Canada. entries closed September 14. spectators free. Over 125 breeds and about 1500 dogs expected. common breeds include beagles, poodles, and cocker spaniels.

Amendments in tax laws delayed in California

The Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee delayed final action on two constitutional amendments raising insurance taxes by at least 11 million dollars annually. Chairman Joe Gonsalves postponed due to quorum shortage after a small hearing. one amendment would phase out the local office deduction over five years, the other would end it immediately.

Lompoc Valley Press Club under Jack Vaughan will host Donna Thompson, head of the Santa Maria methadone clinic, as guest speaker. Thompson, active in mental health since earning a 1962 psychiatric nursing master’s degree, will address the group at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

County Board OKs $5 Daily Methadone Charge

The Board of Supervisors voted 4 to 1 to authorize a $5 daily charge for methadone treatments through the County Mental Health Services. Supervisor Beattie opposed, citing concerns that patients might abandon treatment to avoid payments, while McNamara argued the fee covers treatment costs and helps fund clinics with state grants.
