A series of California quakes shook a wide area, halting power and rattling tall buildings in Los Angeles and outlying cities. Minor damage reported in Barstow Fontana and the San Fernando Valley while aftershocks followed a 7 31 am quake centered near the San Gabriel Mountains.

Tornadoes strike Venice area killing dozens and injuring many
A violent sequence of tornadoes hit Venice and surrounding areas, sinking a 60 foot water bus and destroying campsites. At least 36 people died and over 300 were injured, with 18 aboard the water bus and 11 at the mainland campsite. Rescue crews searched canals by night, while damage extended to the outskirts and regionwide casualties rose.
