Beattie harbors anger over Sheriff's strike threat

Supervisor Francis H. Beattie returned from a San Luis Obispo trip and blasted the Sheriff's deputies' strike threat. He cited wage gains since 1960 and noted a possible $839 monthly top for deputies in 37 years. The Sheriff's Relief and Benefit Association voted 120 to 7 to strike if salary and pension demands aren’t met.

Planning Commission to hear new home use permit requests

Lompoc Planning Commission meets Monday to consider two home use permit requests and a parking variance for an off street lot at Lompoc Plaza. Deborah J. Evans seeks piano and organ instruction at 1625 EK Pine Ave in R-1 zoning. Charles Ramos requests a telephone answering with janitorial services at 1300 E Cypress Ave. Lorand West seeks a parking variance for a major chain store at Pine Ave and H Street Plaza. The meeting also covers landscaping rules at commercial sites and a sign ordinance feasibility study, plus a county rezoning referral and agriculture preserve proposal near Floradale Ave.

Agnew and Tunney trade charges in California Senate race

Vice President Spiro Agnew labels Rep. John V. Tunney a radical liberal during a Republican fundraiser in California. Tunney responds by accusing Agnew of extremism and redirects to domestic issues while Agnew coins the phrase nattering nabobs of negativism. A separate Santa Maria civil suit seeks 1.6 million dollars over the July 4 death at Santa Maria Speedway. The complaint names the speedway, operator J T Simpkins, the Lompoc Slo Pokes club, and landowners as defendants, alleging track negligence.

Hurricane Ella Strikes Mexican Coast Evacuations Underway

Hurricane Ella struck the Mexican coast near El Chamal and Pesca with 125 mph winds as authorities evacuated more than 9,000 residents from low lying areas. Red Cross reports show Port Isabel and South Padre Island refugees moved to Brownsville and nearby cities. Weather outlook includes cooler inland temps and tidal notes through Monday.

Western powers pledge no force to free hijacked airline

Swiss Foreign Minister Pierre Graber said the United States and Israel authorized a crisis council to publicly deny any military action to free hostages held by Arab guerrillas at a Jordan desert airstrip.
