City to Seek Dam Minus Flood Control

Lompoc City Council plans a resolution asking the County Water Agency to push completion of the Lompoc Dam Project study without flood control. The Bureau of Reclamation states flood control is too costly for inclusion. The council also schedules hearings and contracts related to permits, chamber promotions, youth services, and regional wastewater amendments.

Tragic Los Angeles Hotel Fire Kills at Least 11

Dozens trapped as flames surged through a four story Ponet Square hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Officials fear many more bodies remain inside as search crews work around collapse risk. Eight bodies found on the fourth floor as 25 hospitalized and many survivors jump to safety.

Santa Barbara Supervisors Meet After Sheriff Strike Warning

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors held an executive session after the Sheriff Benefit and Relief Association warned that about 210 sworn personnel, roughly 95 percent, would strike at 2 p.m. Thursday unless demands are met. The association seeks a 15 percent wage boost, overtime liberalization, and double educational pay incentives among other concessions.

Three Die In Head On Crash Near Miguelito Canyon

A 22 year old son of Lompoc's fire chief and two other men died in a head on collision on Miguelito Canyon Road near the Johns Manville turnoff. A fourth man was hospitalized in good condition. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Pickets Arrested in Salinas Farm Labor Dispute

Police escorted trucks as four pickets were arrested during a protest against Inter Harvest Inc. and its contract with UFWOC. Two were charged with blocking shipments. The dispute follows several growers switching unions, with Delfino opening negotiations. Produce shipments edged higher as area tensions sparked an armed-camp image.

Five governments urge broad talks to free hijack hostages

Five governments led by the United States Britain West Germany Switzerland and Israel urged Swiss ambassador to Amman to open multiple negotiation channels for 49 or more hostages held by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The Red Cross resumed talks as Israel arrested 450 Arab guerrillas in occupied territory and the fighters threatened reprisals.

Walkout by UAW Seen Imminent as Deadline Looms

DETROIT UPI. As the 11:59 p.m. EST strike deadline neared, UAW and General Motors predicted a walkout unless a settlement emerged. A strike could idle 350,000 GM, costing workers about 42.5 million dollars weekly and GM roughly 30 million daily in lost output. The GM target dominated union talks as Ford was exempted, with leaders warning both sides remain far apart. talks were set to resume at 10 a.m. EST.

Viet Cong Seeks Secret Talks With U S To End War

Mme Nguyen Thi Binh Viet Cong foreign minister arrived in Paris and offered immediate secret talks with the United States. She told Ambassador David K. E. Bruce that Washington must agree to a total unconditional U S troop withdrawal and end support for the Saigon regime.
