Amchitka quake creates huge crater after test blast

The land above Amchitka Island’s 5 megaton underground detonation collapsed into an 800 foot diameter cavity more than a mile deep. Ground movement registered on the Richter scale, officials said, with no radiation escaped. Seabirds and marine life suffered injuries and deaths, while some lake drainage and cliff damage were noted.
