Nejedly wins special election to give Republicans control
John A. Nejedly captured 56.7 percent of the vote ct 82 939 ballots to George Miller III's 61 102 in Contra Costa County securing a 21 19 GOP majority in the California state Senate. The victory ends Democrats 20 year hold and aligns with Gov Ronald Reagan's agenda while signaling Republican strength for 1970 races. Miller conceded late, may return to Washington, and Burns could face a party shift as GOP leaders plan caucus to debate challenging the president pro tempore.
