Chemical Fire Near Mississippi River Levee Evacuates Block 126

A warehouse fire by the Mississippi River levee released noxious fumes prompting evacuation of a 126 block area. No injuries reported. Evacuation lifted about 2.5 hours after onset. residents told it was safe to return home.

Obituary for Delbert N Paaske and Mrs Marjorie Brown

Rosary for Delbert N Paaske 56 will be recited tonight at 8 at McPeek Family Chapel in Lompoc. Requiem Mass tomorrow 10 at La Purisima Catholic Church with Father Andrew McGrath. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. Paaske, born November 6 1912 in Lompoc, worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city for 10 years and previously at Johns Manville Corp for 15 years. Survivors include his widow Hilda, daughter Noreen Dooley, brother Harry II, four sisters, two granddaughters. Funeral services for Marjorie Helen Brown 43 will be held tomorrow at 9 at Newhart Family Mortuary in Santa Maria after dying Tuesday in a San Luis Obispo Hospital. She was a statistical clerk for the Department of Employment and wife of Robert O Brown area distributor for Beachnut Products. She leaves a son three daughters a brother and a sister.

Injury at Lompoc channel project injures Santa Maria man

Arthur Warrecher, 55, of Santa Maria was treated at Lompoc Hospital for a severe laceration to the right knee received yesterday at about 3 p.m. at a drainage ditch construction site between O and H Streets in Lompoc. He was reported in good condition today.

Mulford Rescues Budget Standoff in California Assembly

In Sacramento the six hour late February session ended with a 41 to 27 party line vote to loosen Reagan's 6.2 billion budget check. Mulford arrived from Piedmont after eye surgery to cast the decisive 41st vote alongside Robert Wood as the budget returned to the Senate for final negotiations.

Fire crews quell two small riverbed blazes

County firefighters quickly extinguished a grass fire and a junk auto fire in the riverbed near Seventh Street and Riverside Avenue yesterday. Firemen blamed children for the incidents. no damage was reported.
