Man awaiting murder trial kills wife and seven children
In Jersey City Puerto Rican merchant Rafael Torres 42 awaiting trial for murder is arrested for stabbing and beating deaths of his wife and seven of nine children. An eighth child is critically wounded and Torres suffered a heart attack and is listed in very poor condition. Police search for whether he swallowed pills while questioned. The slain children ranged from 7 to 19 with two eldest daughters described as extremely beautiful Maria 18 was studying to be a nurse and Carie 17 was to graduate from Dickinson High School.

Insecticide Tiodan Suspected in Rhine River Deaths
Bonn report cites North Rhine Westphalia minister Dieter Daneke saying it is probable the nerve gas like poison in the Rhine is the West German insecticide Thiodan Endosulfan. Dutch health authorities had blamed En dosulfan though chemists have not confirmed.

Flower Festival Parade to Feature 15 Floats With Fresh Blossoms
Flower Festival Parade Chairman Cliff Taylor said 16 301 dozen stacks and other flowers have been ordered for 15 floral floats. Colors include white yellow red purple lavender baby pink and enchantress pink. Each blossom will be individually pasted onto the floats which exceed 1000 square feet each, up from about 750 last year. Shipments arrive tonight and tomorrow night and will be kept in water until Friday application begins.

Garland death ruled accidental inquest finds sleeping pill overdose
London coroner ruled Judy Garland died from incautious self overdosage of the sleeping drug Seconal at her Belgravia home. The 47 year old star was found in a locked bathroom by her fifth husband Mickey Deans who testified she had long used the drug. Deans and her doctor denied rumors of heavy drinking and cirrhosis.
