The county assessor blamed government spending, not tax assessors, for rising property taxes as assessed value climbs 17.9 million to 565 million. Holmquist defended conservative valuation and warned staff limits hinder full 25 percent cash-value assessments amid recall movements against him and five supervisors.
State Sen. John A. Nejedly proposes a compromise amendment to ban DDT starting next January with a 1971 cutoff for hard pesticides. He says alternatives must be developed. Sen. Fred Marler Jr. doubts the committee will accept a final cutoff.
Air Astro announced a temporary suspension of operations while reorganizing. The chairman Steve Hazy said Lom Airport to Los Angeles flights ended Friday with limited service Saturday. A suspension notice was posted at Lompoc trailer office.
Lompoc firemen launch a last ditch drive to raise about 1000 dollars next week for the Fourth of July display at Huyck Stadium. Chief John Baker says only 400 dollars is on hand for the 2500 dollar event and funds fund via coin canisters at local merchants or mail donations to the fire department on South G Street. Fireworks will be fired by licensed Lompoc firefighters and the MCA Indian Princesses will raise the patriotic flag.
Viril H. Campbell a Lompoc area rancher and former county supervisor announces a recall movement against Assessor Harry Holmquist. An organizing meeting set for Monday at 8 p.m. at the Grange Hall will recruit supporters amid rising local property taxes blamed on state dictated policies.
Miss Kay Wishard was named the 1969 Flower Festival Queen before 500 at the Lompoc Theatre. The event featured entertainment by Ben Bowman and the Raniers Combo, with runners up Dawn Ebbert Pattie Beattie Kendra Meindersee and Monica Moran and Alexa Kennard earning Miss Congeniality.
South Vietnamese troops and tanks said they punched through the encircling Communist line at Ben Het. About 214 North Vietnamese were reported killed as the 700 man allied garrison faced heavy shelling from roughly 2,000 enemy troops in the surrounding hills.
The County Planning Commission approves a conditional use permit for Lompoc Valley Cable TV to build a 50 foot microwave relay tower at 3865 Constellation Rd in Vandenberg Village. Officials say the site offers clearer signals to Santa Barbara TV Peak and nearby Vandenberg AFB, with painting to blend the structure.
