Army court martials conclude for Presidio sit down protest

A UPI report says a military court-martial board convicted two soldiers, Michael E. Murphy and Lawrence J. Zaine, of mutiny for part in a 27 prisoner protest at the San Francisco Presidio stockade last Oct. 14. Murphy received one year in jail and Zaine two years, with dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay.

Reagan orders documented report on Berkeley People's Park

Governor Reagan announced a written report by his staff to counter claims by protest leaders that officials lied about the Berkeley disturbance. He said the account will be based on eyewitness and official observer reports to document the true events and counter what he called a big lie.

Armed river boats handed to South Vietnam in major turnover

In Saigon Gen Abrams presided over the transfer of 64 armed river patrol boats worth 18.2 million dollars to South Vietnam marking the largest hardware turnover in the push to de Americanize the war. The ceremony symbolized Vietnamization as 800 American crewmen left their boats to Vietnamese crews.

Tax reform bill clears Assembly committee in California

Reagan's $6.2 billion tax reform program advances from the Assembly Revenue and Taxation committee after a six hour hearing. Democrats hint they may support the budget if tax reform moves to the floor. Bagley accuses them of stall tactics. The plan includes voluntary withholding, a 1 percent gross income tax, a statewide nonresidential property tax, and extended sales tax to services.

Man tests glue by volunteering under guillotine

Unruh oil drilling liability bill dies in committee

Gov Reagan denies blame for the failure of Assembly Democratic leader Jess Unruh’s bill to require oil firms to pay all damages from offshore drilling disasters. The Republican controlled committee killed the measure on a split vote amid lobbying by major oil interests and questions of federal jurisdiction.
