Five finalists chosen for Flower Festival Queen contest
The Flower Festival Queen committee announced Pattie Beattie Dawn Ebbert Kendra Meindersee Monica Moran and Kay Wishard as the five finalists by ticket sales. They will perform tonight at 7 30 p m in a talent contest at the Lompoc Theatre featuring modern dance baton twirling an Hawaiin routine acrobatics an accordion number and dramatic interpretation Escorts are Junior officers from Vandenberg AFB. The event will crown the queen with the Raniers Combo and Ben Bowman providing entertainment. Jim Carey serves as master of ceremonies.

Demolition contractor blows up home killing self and family

Spike the cougar to ride in flower parade
Arrangements have been made for Spike the Mercury Cougar to ride in Saturday’s Flower Festival parade at 10 a.m. with owners Pat and Ted Derby of Anima Kingdom Buellton. Beattie Motors loaned the cougar’s convertible for the event. At 1 p.m. animals will be on view at Ryan Park in their cages alongside Boris the Siberian tiger Nehahnia the timberwolf and Sweet William the black bear.

Plane crashes into Miami center killing ten in horror
A Dominican Airlines cargo plane plowed through a two story medical center in Miami, wreckage ignited a two block area and killed ten people while injuring twelve others. The four crew members died, including Captain Jorge Bujosa and Copilot Carlos Brander. Five more perished in a nearby garage.

City to install bright street lamps downtown and residential blocks
Utilities chief Scolari announced 80 new Lucalux lamps for downtown with 44 000 lumen capacity and 25 mercury vapor midblock fixtures for north and west residential areas at 400 each. Westbrook Pegler Dies Pulitzer Prize Winning Columnist
Pulitzer Prize winner Westbrook Pegler, famed for his scathing columns and feuds with presidents, died at age 74 in Tucson at St Marys Hospital. He had suffered stomach cancer in recent years and retired to his home five years ago. Peglers career included a column in 186 newspapers and a reported million dollars.
