Busy Week Ahead in Courthouse Square

Courthouse Square remains busy with a Bank of America burning case trial for 11 defendants before Superior Judge John A. Westwick. County Grand Jury, county supervisors, and planning commissions schedule meetings in various rooms, with an all day weekly planning session and a joint session with Lompoc City Planning. An instruction class for voter registrars is set for 7:30 pm in the County Administration Building, followed by three meetings tomorrow including the Subdivision Committee, WV am meeting, and LAFCO.

Seven LA police arraigned on manslaughter charges in raid

Seven policemen from Los Angeles and San Leandro faced arraignment on manslaughter counts stemming from a raid on a tenement where two unarmed Mexican men were killed. The officers sought a murder suspect who surrendered later. none in the apartment spoke English. FBI and federal grand jury probes are examining possible civil rights violations.

Welfare office cleared by state in Santa Maria review

The State Department of Social Welfare concluded its review of cases at the Santa Maria County Welfare Office where sit down protests occurred. Mrs. Ethel Kenyon said each case was read and grants reviewed for adherence to state policy. A letter was sent to Mary Chessner of the County Welfare Rights Organization and filed with the Board of Supervisors.

Funeral services held for Mrs Iva J Woods at McPeek chapel

Funeral services for 67 year old Mrs Iva J Woods were held yesterday at McPeek Family Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. The Long Beach resident died Friday. Survivors include three sons Bert Harrison of Lompoc James Harrison of Louisiana and Fred Harrison of Northridge a sister Mrs Grace Hamilton of Texas seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Closing Board denies Stocks Plea by CAC

The Lompoc Record reports the County Community Action Commission CAC appeals to the Board of Supervisors to reconsider cutting welfare funding and to support Senate Bills 87 and 88 boosting AFDC aid in Santa Barbara County. A bus accident on North H Street caused minor damage with no injuries. Supervisors defend cuts to welfare positions to save money, while CAC points to HEW findings and risks to federal matching funds if AFDC aid is not raised.

Reynolds Metal to open 16 aluminum reclaim centers

Dr. Robert F. Testin of Reynolds Metal Corp announced at a URI antipollution conference that the Richmond based company will establish 16 nationwide centers to reclaim aluminum scrap from used cans. A pilot center already operates in Los Angeles and pays 10 cents per pound.
