Hijack of Olympic Airways Jet by Arab Guerrillas

Arab guerrillas seized an Olympic Airways jet carrying 58 aboard near Athens and threatened to explode it unless seven jailed Arabs were released. After hours of negotiations led by Deputy Premier Pattakos, hostages were gradually freed and the plane prepared to depart for Beirut with six crew members and an ICRC representative aboard. Onassis offered to be a hostage, but the hijackers insisted on Greek official accompaniment back to Beirut.

Lompoc Council Sets Weed Abatement Plan and Highway Study

Lompoc Unified Approves 1970 71 Budget With $10.8 Million Expenditures

Cranston urges sanctuary trustees of Lompoc Unified. The board approves the 1970 71 fiscal publication budget for a public hearing on Aug 4. Expenditures exceed $10.8 million with a $3.85 tax rate per $100 and a $1.15 permissive override. No salary raises beyond in step progressions. Additional $268,000 state funds, $23,000 to be allocated for various classifications including principal administrator, await Congress funding decisions. Milk contract split between two dealers.

Robbers hijack panel truck of gold in Bronx

Five men seized a panel truck carrying 230000 dollars in gold at 8 30 a m on an expressway entrance in the Bronx and fled with less than a third of the shipment. Three hours later the truck was found abandoned with 160000 dollars worth of bullion intact. Police said the heavy bulk of the gold prevented its complete removal. The incident underscores a bold daytime theft in New York.

Lompoc's 1970-71 preliminary budget raises police funding by 21 000 with more possible by midyear and adds a new community relations officer at sergeant pay. The police total tops 420 400 with salaries over 368 900 for 40 staff. fire gains 9 000 to 254 145 plus 10 000 for a joint dispatch program.
