Preliminary data show Lompoc gained over 9 000 residents from 1960 to the latest count. Kennedy reports improving economy and policy gains

Treasury Secretary David M. Kennedy told Congress inflation pressures are easing and the economy is shifting from war to peace time. Labor Secretary Hodgson predicted unemployment rises can be avoided with anti inflation measures, while prices rose 0.4 percent in June due to higher costs for used cars homes and services.

Six contend grand jury illegal near UCSB campus

Six people indicted for arson and rioting near the University of California Santa Barbara campus argue the grand jury was illegally formed. Defense attorney Richard Soloman says jurors lacked a fair cross section of Santa Barbara County, omitting students and Isla Vista residents. Large increase planned for Lompoc recreation budget

Committee forms to study beautification of Lompoc highway

A six man committee of regional government officials and agency heads was organized Monday night in Lompoc to study and plan beautification of the highway from downtown Lompoc to the Vandenberg AFB main gate. City Councilman E C Stevens will chair.

Nixon says South Vietnam would share government with Communists

President Nixon said Saigon leaders are willing to share power with Communist groups if a free election leads to a coalition. He stressed the United States will not push a coalition before elections and that the Communists could participate in a free vote, with acceptance of the outcome. The remarks came ahead of a National Security Council meeting on Vietnam.

Nixon orders Bruce and Bunker home for new talks

President Nixon says David K. E. Bruce and Ellsworth Bunker will return to discuss proposals with North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. He also warns he may veto a bill restricting imports with non textile quotas and notes inflation cooling while productivity may rise. The U S has not decided on Israel’s request for more war planes to support peace efforts.
