Girl on Bike Hit by Car in Lompoc Collision

A 12 year old girl on a bicycle was struck by a car driven by 49 year old Gordon Awold Loose on Central Avenue near O Street in Lompoc. The cyclist suffered a fractured leg and possible concussion and was listed in good condition at Lompoc Hospital. The incident occurred at 3 p.m. as both parties traveled westbound on Central Avenue.

National effort to curb high blood pressure announced

Secretary Richardson announced a two day conference to educate the public on hypertension and named a private group to lead a nationwide program. He cited 23 million sufferers in the United States and roughly 50 000 annual deaths while noting only 4.6 million receive adequate treatment. The plan includes community screening projects and expanded government and private cooperation. The National Heart and Lung Institute spends about 20 million annually on hypertension research.

A Venereal disease education course titled VD and the Youth of School Age will be offered in Lompoc as a UC extension course. The Lompoc Vandenberg VD education committee meets tonight at 7 30 at the Security Pacific Bank.

Three enter Lompoc school trustee race

Three candidates have filed nominating papers for seats on the Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees. They are former councilman Richard K. Jacoby Billie L Grider an engineer at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Edward J Diaz who lives at 301 North Y. Nominating papers are due by February 16 for two open seats in the April 17 election. Incumbents DeWayne Holmdahl plans reelection while Marjorie Thomas will not run again. Terms expire June 30.

Composer Says Inauguration Piece Cut From Program

Vincent Persichetti says his 11 minute tone poem for Nixon's inauguration was removed from the program because its text about war conflicted with official sensibilities. The commission had proposed using Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address as the text and Charlton Heston as narrator. A Washington committee spokesman cited reasons unrelated to Persichetti's suggestion.

NFFE Wins Exclusive Recognition at Vandenberg AFB

The National Federation of Federal Employes Local 1001 won exclusive recognition for all base exchange personnel at Vandenberg Air Force Base after an election supervised by the Department of Labor. About 175 voters were eligible, with 86 in favor and 44 against. The union will represent about 1,900 employees in wage surveys and collective bargaining once certified.
