Congress cannot stop Vietnam war say leaders

Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield and Republican leader Hugh Scott argued Congress cannot end the Vietnam conflict. They warned even a funds cutoff would be vetoed or challenged in court, with the purse as Congress's main weapon. Both cited Paris talks as the path to a settlement and remained cautiously hopeful.

Nixon orders bombing halt as peace talks progress

President Nixon halted all bombing and shelling of North Vietnam effective 10 a.m. January 15 citing progress in Kissinger Tho negotiations. Reports of a looming ceasefire circulated from Saigon to Paris while Hanoi denied imminent peace though Kissinger Tho talks continued.

F4 Phantom shot down but crewmen safe in Tonkin Gulf

U S military officials said a US F4 Phantom was shot down by North Vietnamese 85 mm anti aircraft fire about 100 miles south of the border but both crewmen parachuted to safety. The 7th Fleet reported a destroyer escort O Callahan slightly damaged by shrapnel from shore batteries with no injuries. Da Nang airbase came under rocket fire wounding one civilian and damaging planes trucks and buildings. Heavy ground fighting continued with no territorial gains for either side amid ongoing peace talks.

Regan Bribery Case Could Yield Up To 14 Year Term

Philip Regan of Montecito faces possible state prison time up to 14 years on any one of two bribery charges. Additional charges involve setting jail terms if convicted. The district attorney lists offenses including offering bribes to executives, bribery of public officers, bribing supervisors, and soliciting bribes with penalties up to 14 years, or up to five years for certain counts.
