Arrests of two soldiers for absence without leave

Sheriff deputies arrested James M. Newman aged 21 and Jimmy W. Helton for being absent without leave from Fort Riley Kansas. They were turned over to Security Police at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Rose Queen to crown Fete Queen at 1970 festival

The 1970 Flower Festival Queen will be crowned Friday February 20 by Pamela Dee Tedesco Miss Pasadena Tournament of Roses. She will crown Lompoc’s reigning queen and attend the event in Lompoc with Ralph Helpbringer. The ceremony follows the talent portion on June 19 in a display honoring the Tournament of Roses.

Educator Democrat Miller to seek 13th District seat

David H. Miller 26 an educator and Ventura Democrat announces his candidacy for Congress from California's 13th District covering Ventura Santa Barbara and NW Los Angeles County. He promotes a citizen driven plan using voter punch cards to decide major legislation and vows to reject contributions over 25 dollars. Miller teaches at Isbelt School Santa Paula and leads the Ventura Democratic Club. He lives with his wife Emmy in Ventura and cites a non vested interest stance. He intends a broad small donor campaign and says he is pledged to the people 750 000 in the district.

Assemblyman Ryan Tests Folsom Prison Life For A Week

California Assemblyman Leo J. Ryan a Burlingame Democrat spent seven days in Folsom State Prison in a self imposed stay to study the prison system. He wore the uniform and was escorted by staff and inmates who knew his identity. He plans to file a 70 page report detailing his experiences and observations.
