Carswell cleared by Senate Judiciary panel for Supreme Court seat
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Judge G Harrold Carswell for the Supreme Court 21 to 4 sending the nomination to the floor. The panel also set a date to consider a constitutional amendment replacing the electoral college. Opponents cited civil rights records and past white supremacist remarks but Carswell denied racial motivation.

Tragic Pedestrian Death in Santa Maria From Car Collision
A five year old girl Anne Margaret Worhacz died yesterday after being struck crossing a street near her Santa Maria home. Marian Hospital Santa Maria declared her dead on arrival. Driver Terry Lee Orvis 25 of Santa Maria was released after questioning. In Lompoc Valley a motorcycle crash injured Patrick Howe 17 of Lompoc and passenger William Rumpff 17 of Van denberg Village. Howe treated at Lompoc Hospital Rumpff at Vandenberg AFB Hospital. The off ramp of Lompoc Casmalia Road near Burton Mesa Road was the accident site per the CHP.
