Ag Center to close in June amid federal cuts

Lompoc's Agriculture Research Center will shut down in June after federal budget reductions. Four of five staffers will transfer to Fresno to support agricultural pollution efforts in California's San Joaquin Valley. The facility, opened in 1957, produced research and papers and aided local farmers with crop breeding and soil rainfall studies.

Israel broadens air strikes as Thant warns of new Middle East danger

Israeli planes bombed missile sites 19 miles south of Cairo in a deep strike, the first in five days. Thant at the United Nations warned that only strong measures can avert a new catastrophe. Bickmore resigns county post

County Petroleum Engineer David K. Bickmore of Santa Maria resigns his $15 228 a year county post after stating suspension damaged his reputation. Supervisors accepted his resignation unanimously as Bickmore cited new conflict of interest concerns and lingering questions from an investigation that followed his reinstatement.

U S seeks new ban on biological weapons at Geneva talks

At the Geneva Disarmament Conference the United States urged immediate negotiation of a treaty banning production possession and use of biological weapons. Russia demanded a blanket prohibition of all chemical and biological arms with no verification. Gerard C. Smith and Alexei A. Roschin presented rival positions as the session opened after a three month recess. Smith argued separating chemical and biological arms. Roschin urged complete prohibition of both. Western officials hope for a biological only agreement but acknowledge chemical arms complicate talks.

City council race grows filings in Lompoc

Two more candidates, Mayor Robert MacClure and banker George Cotsenmeyer, filed papers for the April 14 Lompoc city council election joining Floyd Dunlap and E C Stevens. Other potential contenders include Henry Ramirez Brooks Speight Sol Lefkowtiz and Councilman Richard Jacoby who has yet to declare. Nominations close Thursday at noon. MacClure and Cotsenmeyer were endorsed by local figures such as Edward Lilly Nelson Carter H L Campbell William A Paulin and Kenneth R Wright among others.
