Countywide tree program may damage sidewalks up to $100000
County Road Commissioner Leland Steward told the Board of Supervisors the street tree planting plan could cause as much as 100000 in sidewalk damage across unincorporated areas. About 29500 in the El Encanto tract of Goleta Valley stems from tree roots lifting sidewalks, with proposals to remove and replace at county expense and to bill homeowners for private trees. A further soil and species study is needed before expanding to other tracts, amid debate over who should pay for changes and repairs.
