Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird said the United States will set no timetable for withdrawing troops from Vietnam and opposed an 18 month deadline. He spoke after meetings with Gen. Creighton Abrams and outlined Vietnamization phases moving combat responsibility to South Vietnam, then support and advisory roles.

Egyptian army raids across Suez Canal reported
A force of 100 Egyptian infantry crossed the Suez Canal capturing a fortified Israeli position and machine gunned an armored column. Cairo said at least 20 Israeli soldiers were killed or wounded, three armored cars were knocked out, and two Israeli soldiers were captured.

Army High Command Holds Calley Prosecution in Limbo

Valley showers add to Lompoc rainfall total
Scattered showers drenched Lompoc Valley overnight, totaling about 0.40 inch at the water treatment plant and 0.62 inch for the storm, lifting the season total to 6.23 inches compared with 14.19 inches by this time last year. No damage was reported, unlike last year’s heavier rains.
