Recycle Christmas Trees Drive Begins in Lompoc

Lompoc Recycling Committee promotes tree recycling with 1500 leaflets to schools and public places. Residents urged to bring trees to the Waste Water Treatment Plant on West Central Ave for mulching and nutrient return. The plant operates daily 9 am to 4 pm and a Santa Barbara ordinance bans Christmas tree burns.

VICE-CHANCELLOR Goodspeed to lead UCSB university liaison role

Stephen S Goodspeed named to succeed Ray Varley as university liaison official with county government at UCSB. Varley returns to University of Utah. associate William Steinmetz will help coordinate with off campus agencies and County Planning Commission meetings will involve Peter Chapman and Robson Chambers in the vice chancellor's office.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the McPeek Family Mortuary Chapel for Walter Bruno Werner 81 who died Thursday night at Lompoc Community Hospital Interment will be in Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery Father Stewart Fitch officiating. Werner born in Meridan Conn in 1890 was a watch repairman for 45 years and lived in Lompoc area two and a half years. Survivors include son Richard of Lompoc brother Emil Werner of Connecticut and grandsons Randolf R Werner of Santa Barbara and Ronald S Werner of the U S Air Force. Christmas chess tourney set at Cabrillo High

The Record hosts its second annual all-school Christmas Chess Tournament Monday at 9 a.m. at Cabrillo High School. Eligibility includes all students in Lompoc Valley. about 160 participated last year from 14 of 18 district schools and La Purisima. Prizes include a chess clock, four sets, eight books, and federation memberships.

Lefty Bryant Is Sentenced In Isla Vista Bomb Case

Louis Lefty Bryant, 26, a Santa Barbara black militant, receives a one to five year state prison term for possessing eight firebombs linked to the Isla Vista riots. Superior Judge John T. Ricard denies probation and a new trial. Bryant sent to China Reception Center before state prison. He fled in February 1970 and was arrested by the FBI in Denver. Bail forfeited. extradition waived.
