Reagan seeks job corps plan in California
Gov. Ronald Reagan asked President Nixon for permission to set up a large job corps for able bodied welfare recipients who must work or lose relief. The program would run at least three years in 35 of California's 58 counties and target AFDC recipients. Reagan estimated about 58,776 would be eligible, or 3.8 percent of AFDC individuals and 13.2 percent of AFDC families, out of 2.1 million Californians on welfare. Jobs would include schoolyard monitoring litter pickup and park maintenance.
