Gas tax increase in California to fund flood repairs

Governor Reagan signed a bill boosting the state gasoline tax by one cent per gallon effective June 1 to raise about 62.9 million dollars for flood damage repairs. The measure, part of flood relief funding, allows a later rollback and requires local agencies to share costs before receiving state aid.

New city recreation department hires two 1968 UO graduates

Bill Keefe and Julie Schlesser join the city recreation staff as leaders overseeing men and boys activities and women and girls programs. Keefe, 22, from Eugene, Oregon, majored in recreation management at the University of Oregon and worked with Eugene Parks and Recreation. Schlesser, 22, from Portland, Oregon, graduated from Lincoln High and UO, played tennis and volleyball, and has Girl Scout camp counselor experience.

Fires and arrests accompany Reagan speech at Biltmore

A series of fires set by road flares and cherry bombs disrupted a Mexican American convention at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles as Gov. Ronald Reagan spoke. Fifteen Mexican-Americans were arrested after interruptions. about 75 firefighters fought flames across floors 1 4 9 and 10 causing damage estimated at 10 000 with smoke losses up to 100 000. No injuries occurred and few guests were evacuated.

Community event roundup announces April May schedule

Cabrillo Booster Club hosts two Steam concerts on April 25 at 7 30 and 9 30 p m with advance ticket outlets listed. Lompoc AAUW presents Sganarelle April 25 and Box of 7 Faces April 26 at Cabrillo Little Theater. Various fundraisers and shows run April 26 to June 14 including car washes, dances, fashion show, auto show, drug abuse clinics, auctions, and a library sale. Proceeds support local groups and Queen Dawn Ebbert.

Haight Ashbury triple murder shocks San Francisco

Police probe a gangland style execution in a Haight Ashbury apartment where three young drug users were killed. Victims Joseph Oswald 24 of Martinez Margaret Jo Focht 18 and Cindy Marie Taylor 21 of Daly City were found kneeling with a single headshot each.
