De Gaulles Referendum Vote Turbulence Across Campuses

As De Gaulle faces a pivotal referendum in France and campuses reel from upheaval in the United States Cornell University and other schools report armed militants and disarmament calls. At Cornell 15 militants armed guns seized Straight Hall for 36 hours while professors pledge not to teach until guns are surrendered. County jail nears completion months ahead of plan

Construction on the Goleta Valley county jail is progressing so quickly that officials expect finish by February or March 1970. County Supervisor chairman Francis H Beattie and Administrative Officer Raymond D Johnson watched inspections on the County Hospital property north of Highway 101. General contractor J W Bailey of Santa Barbara may have the project completed several months ahead of the midsummer occupancy date previously forecast.

Airport plan faces FAA county discrepancies before hearing

State aviation planner cites serious differences between FAA and county master plan figures for Lompoc Valley Airport. FAA places 1968 traffic at over 36 000 operations, while county estimates 18 000 through 1967 and 20 114 through 1970. Hearing to review revisions continues, with sheriff’s facility and jail costs also discussed.

County to review salary survey for 1968-69 pay plan

A months long county salary survey for about 2000 employees may be ready for the Board of Supervisors by May 12. County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson said Personnel Officer Robert Smith will review recommendations with departments and employee groups before the report goes to the supervisors. The survey and recommendations will form the basis for new salary structures to take effect July 1, with a further survey possible to adjust upward revisions next January 1.

Earl Cass Loses Hat in Wind on North H Street

Witnesses say Earl Cass, driving a Singer convertible, lost his hat to a gust while traveling down North H Street yesterday. A large truck overturned dumping a dirt load onto Constellation Road, causing a brief drive disruption and cleanup needed.

Weather Outlook for Walmer This Weekend

Fair weather expected today and Sunday with highs in the upper 60s to upper 70s and lows around the upper 40s to low 50s. Winds north to northwest 10 to 20 mph, up to 25 mph in afternoon gusts. Sunday tides show high 4.2 and 4.5 feet, low 1.8 and 0.3 feet. Monday high tides 4.3 and 4.9 feet, low tides 1.2 and 0.4 feet.

Fire and police personnel split from city employes group

Lompoc police and fire personnel resigned from the Lompoc Em ployes Association to form a separate body tentatively named Lompoc Public Safety Officers Association. Police Lt. Mel Ramos resigned as president of the overall city employee association. About 18 of 20 fire personnel and ~37 of police will join the new group.

Smoking debate shifts public view in Lompo c
