Visitors at Mission Fiesta Days May 18 will watch a live olive oil processing demonstration reminiscent of La Purisima Mission residents. Lindsay Olive Corp. donated 165 gallons of olives for the event with Juanita the donkey powering the grinder and Eugene Forbes from the La Purisima Advisory Committee leading the demonstration.

Man charged after shooting spree in Lompoc
A 50 year old Santa Barbara man, James Tony Scalise, was booked on attempted murder after a shooting that left Richard Smith, 40, wounded in the foot and leg. Smith and Scalise’s wife Nancy Jane Scalise, 38, deaf mutes, were involved in a confrontation near West Ocean Avenue. Bail set at $3125.

FCI escapee at large after prison break
An FCI escapee, Steven Michael Caldwell, 21, of Santa Rosa, cut cell bars and scaled the fence, with authorities tying the escape to a stolen 1968 Corvette later found abandoned in Goleta. The fugitive had a four year sentence for interstate car theft as a nationwide manhunt continued.
