Desperadoes Surrender After Jail Break Near Honolulu

Five of six inmates who fled Halawa Jail surrendered meekly and were recaptured as police moved in with shotguns and M16 rifles at a Kahala house. Suspects Medeiros Cuevas and Silva were seized. two others Kealoha and Brown were arrested nearby. Edward Hose remained at large with murder charges totaling seven for the group.

Sisters rescue family after Easter airplane crash

Two young sisters aged 10 and 9 walked four hours through rain soaked woods to summon help for their family following a plane crash near Orinda. Rancher Henry Boeger and Contra Costa deputies aided in rescuing James Bryner and family, all in satisfactory condition at John Muir Hospital.

Gardena High Students Set Teeter-Totter Endurance Record

John Adam and Donald Ball, both 16, from Gardena High School, surpassed the Guinness World Record by teeter-tottering for 130 12 hours, starting earlier Sunday and ending at 4 p.m. Students explained they chose the stunt during Easter holidays and sought an easy record to break.

Hoffa to return to jail after Easter visit

James Hoffa, Teamsters official furloughed from Lewisburg Prison, spent Easter with his ailing wife Josephine Hoffa at UC Medical Center where doctors said her condition is improving. Attorney Morris Shenker said Hoffa would return to the penitentiary in Pennsylvania today.

Marchers protest Constellation sailing in Bremerton

Nearly 300 anti-war demonstrators marched through Bremerton against the USS Constellation’s sailing. Sailors attached to the ship joined the protest, reporting for duty at midnight as the carrier prepared to depart for San Diego then Southeast Asia. A candlelight vigil was planned by about 35 protesters after the march.
